📖Synopsis

We live in an age dominated by screens. For many, life is sedentary, and it’s become increasingly difficult to prioritize physical activity. Quietly conformed to this new normal, they feel sluggish and unmotivated. Others, however, have become entangled in a fitness culture that prioritizes the self, fuels pride, and coddles idolatry. Is it possible to make exercise holy?

A Little Theology of Exercise explores how stewarding our bodies can serve the soul, honor God, and bless others. Combining biblical texts with practical guidance, pastor and author David Mathis encourages readers to embrace modest exercise as a way to deepen their knowledge and enjoyment of Christ and then reflect his love in the world. By placing Christ at the center of physical training, readers will discover a greater joy in exercise and an even deeper joy in their relationship with God.

💭My Thoughts

“Exercise is a friend of the Christian.”

I was pleasantly surprised by this little book- what an excellent look at exercise from a Christian perspective!

I love fitness, but never really connected Christianity and exercise. However, this book gave me a new perspective and really left me with a lot to think on. I learned about the biblical root of exercising and caring for your body, several compelling reasons why exercising is important, and all the many physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of moving your body.

One specific thing that really stuck with me was the section about incorporating prayer with exercise - I had never thought about it the way the author shared it, but it was so inspiring and made so much sense!

Altogether, a very helpful, encouraging little book on exercising as a Christian that inspired me to see exercise as a gift from God. It released today (7/22/25) and I would highly recommend that you check it out!

Out of necessity, I actually read this as an ebook (my first time doing so and hopefully the last) and thus I made quite a few highlights. Some of my favorite quotes follow.

🤍 Some favorite quotes...

“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”

“We did not create our bodies (and souls) nor did we pay the price to redeem them.”

“Exercise as a Christian by exercising in light of what God says about your body in His Word and by praying with gratitude for His help, blessing, and smile on your bodily training. Don’t exercise with the presumption of unbelievers but consecrate your workouts- make them holy- through the Word of God and prayer.”

“We were made to reflect and display Him, to be mobile monuments to God’s strength and beauty, not to be stationary statues.”

“Laziness may feel good for a moment, but it is not satisfying in the end.”

“God made our bodies to be healthier and happier when they move.”

“How might it change your exercise routine if you did not exercise for mere weight loss, long-term health, or improved physical appearance but instead to enjoy God more today?”

“Most of us will be well served by modest upkeep, making subtle changes in our default mindset, and learning to enjoy exercise.”
