📖 Synopsis
Mornings can be tough. Sometimes, a hearty breakfast and strong cup of coffee just aren’t enough. Offering far more than a rush of caffeine, bestselling author Paul David Tripp aims to energize Christian readers with the most potent encouragement imaginable: the gospel.
In the popular devotional New Morning Mercies, 365 engaging readings lead off with a compelling, gospel-centered thought, followed by an extended meditation for the day. Focused less on behavior modification and more on helping people encounter the living God, this resource equips readers with the good news that they need to trust in God’s goodness, rely on his grace, and live for his glory―day in and day out.
💭 My Thoughts
"New Morning Mercies" is an excellent daily devotional chockful of gospel truths. Each day offers a thoughtful reflection that pointed me back to Scripture and really, the heart of the gospel and God's grace. I loved the emphasis on hope, and was impressed by how powerful and encouraging every page was. I know this is a book I will be returning to again!
I will note that I found it a bit repetitive at times. Some devotions seemed to echo similar phrases, and at least a few times sentences were repeated. There were also a couple instances when I wasn't sure I fully agreed on how things were said, but they are so minute they aren't worth mentioning here. My main complaint was its repetitiveness and, at times, lack of variety, but that's likely just me-- overall, I still really liked this book and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to strengthen their faith and ground themselves in the gospel each and every morning.
🕮 Some quotes that stood out to me
"Even though you're a person of faith who has acquired some degree of biblical literacy and theological knowledge, there's one thing you can be sure of-- God will confuse you."
"Where is hope to be found? In five life-altering words: 'I am with you always.'"
"Hope is not a thing, not a location, not a situation, not an experience. Hope is a person, and His name is Jesus."
"Tear up your list and throw it away-- what God has planned for you is better than anything you've dreamed of for yourself."
"Real, biblical, self-sacrificing, God-honoring love never compromises what God says is right and true. Truth and love are inextricably bound together."
"...Moments of difficulty are not an interruption of His plan or the failure of His plan, but rather an important part of His plan."
"On your very worst, most rebellious, and most faithless day, you can run into the holy presence of your heavenly Father and He will not turn you away."
"Putting your entire existence into the hands of One whom you cannot see, touch, or hear is far from natural. This is why faith is only ever a gift of divine grace."
"If you obey Him for a thousand years, you will have no more of His favor than when you first believed."
"When you don't understand what's going on, run to God's goodness rather than questioning if it exists."
